   SCRs (Selective Catalytic Reduction)

What is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)?

SCR represents a breakthrough technology leveraging a urea-based Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) and a catalytic converter to dramatically diminish oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. Positioned as the premier solution for complying with the Environmental Protection Agency's 2010 Heavy-Duty Highway Engines and Vehicle emissions reduction regulations, SCR technology is indispensable in mitigating harmful emissions.

How does the SCR system function?

At its core, the SCR system treats exhaust gas expelled by the engine. Minute amounts of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) are injected into the exhaust before encountering a catalyst, where it undergoes vaporization and decomposition, forming ammonia (NH3) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The resultant ammonia (NH3) collaborates with the SCR catalyst, effectively converting NOx into harmless nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O).

Why the emphasis on NOx reduction?

The primary goal of the SCR system is to curtail levels of NOx, which pose significant risks to both human health and the environment. NOx emissions contribute to the formation of smog, a detrimental atmospheric phenomenon. By addressing NOx emissions, we aim to mitigate the adverse effects of smog, thereby fostering a cleaner, healthier environment for all.

What is DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid)?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is integral to the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. It's a meticulously crafted solution comprising 32.5% high purity urea and 67.5% deionized water. Urea, derived from natural gas, transforms into ammonia upon heating. It's widely utilized across industries, including agriculture as a fertilizer.

What advantages does SCR technology offer fleets?

Heavy-duty engines employing SCR witness up to a 5% enhancement in fuel economy. The SCR catalyst ensures superior NOx conversion efficiency, optimizing engine performance and contributing to the fuel economy boost. Additionally, improved fuel consumption results in less frequent Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) cleaning, translating to reduced operational costs.
